I don’t know what the appropriate ratio of dreaming is to remembering your dreams. I know they say everybody dreams, every night (or whenever they sleep). I can’t argue because I don’t actually know one way or the other. What I do know is that very rarely do I dream or, if I do dream, very rarely do I remember what I’ve dreamed about.
This week has been an exception to that rule.
First I dreamed that my oldest son sent me a picture of his dad’s cracked skull and then another picture of his beaten and bruised face. I’m not sure what prompted that dream except maybe it was my subconscious injuring him for stealing my kid’s rent money.
Then I had a dream I was driving down the street with my 15-year-old son. We were driving with the windows down. The sun was shining. A cop pulled up next to us and blew his horn. We both looked over at him as he rolled down his window and he very casually picked up his gun and shot at Mel. I woke up as soon as he pulled the trigger.
Next, I had a dream that I was staying at my friend’s house. I don’t know who the friend was. But the house was having major plumbing issues. I was trying to take a shower and the walls were soaked from all the pipes leaking. And then some guy who I obviously knew in the dream decided he was going to shower with me. It seemed perfectly normal for us. We were laughing and kissing and having a good time. Next thing I know, we are on a long leather couch trying to get it on and a friend of mine (who I do know) was on the couch and would not leave. Every time we tried to get close, she would butt in like she was trying to get close. So when I said something, she got defensive like she wanted to fight, but before the first swing was thrown, I woke up.
I don’t recall eating anything odd before going to sleep. I didn’t take anything to help me sleep. I wasn’t drinking. I don’t do drugs. I don’t drink milk. I don’t typically eat spicy foods. Those are all the reasons I’ve ever heard for having crazy or scary dreams.
I usually have the same crazy, scary dream. I usually dream of water. I dream I’m getting washed away by a tidal wave or a tsunami. I get tossed about underwater and when I come up, I’m in the middle of a forest coming out of the bottom of a man-made pool. There are kids swimming around who I don’t know and then I get out and walk on a trail through the woods to I don’t know where because I always wake up before I get to my destination.
Maybe I dream like that every night and I just don’t remember? Which makes me kind of glad I don’t remember because I really don’t like waking up feeling bothered by a dream. There are so many other things in life around to bother me. Dreams shouldn’t be one of them.
Do you remember your dreams? What’s the craziest one you’ve had?
